"I didn’t think anyone cared about me, but now I feel like I have people I can trust and a reason to try my best."

Chloe*, 13, has faced significant upheaval throughout her life. Removed from her mother at birth due to addiction and mental health issues, Chloe was raised by her dad, who became her closest pal.

For many years, their bond gave her a sense of stability. However, when his health deteriorated, Chloe’s life was turned upside down. During one of what would become frequent health crises, an event led to her being taken into care. A few months later, Chloe’s dad tragically passed away.

Initially placed with a female relative, life started to feel stable again. However, earlier this year, she was asked to leave and was sent to live with another relative

Despite her resilience, the repeated changes left her feeling abandoned and distrustful of adults. At school, Chloe struggled to follow instructions and was often perceived as defiant, putting her at risk of exclusion. Despite her challenges, she remained determined to find some stability.

When Chloe joined the SOHK programme, she was sceptical and hesitant to engage. Her initial attitude was one of resistance. However, she has committed 100% attendance from the beginning, a testament to Chloe’s quiet resilience.

She formed an immediate connection with a female member of staff, and her relationships with others have grown over time.

Through consistent mentoring and supportive classroom sessions, Chloe started to open up and trust the people around her. Her time on the field has transformed as well - what began as reluctance soon turned into active participation. Chloe’s effort and determination have even earned her SOHK’s Player of the Day multiple times, reflecting her growing confidence and sense of belonging.

Chloe’s school has reported noticeable positive changes in her behaviour, highlighting that she is much calmer and seems happier since joining SOHK.

She remains uncertain about her future but feels more settled living with her relative. Chloe has shared aspirations of continuing her education, attending college, and pursuing her passions, which include sports.

SOHK will continue to support Chloe on her journey, helping her build her confidence and work toward her life goals.
