I’m learning to be strong for myself. Even when things are hard, I want to keep going. SOHK has helped me feel like I have people who care.”

Maura* joined the SOHK schools programme in Year 8. She was bright, and articulate, and brought a positive energy to the group. Her Head of Year had referred her to the programme to help her build confidence, particularly in sports.

During an initial 1:1 mentoring session, Maura shared her complex home life. Her mother had gone away when Maura was an infant, and she had only seen her during rare visits. Her father, who often travelled for extended periods, would leave Maura alone at home, leaving her to look after herself. Occasionally, a relative stayed at the house, but they were largely absent, and when present, Maura was expected to cook and clean for them. This conversation led to an immediate safeguarding referral. In total, 9 referrals were made before any action was taken by the authorities.

At the end of one term, Maura left school early to spend the break with her older sister in Europe. When school resumed, she returned, but her father was still overseas, and she was once again left with her relative. This prompted another safeguarding referral. Her older brother attempted to support her as best he could, however, despite his efforts, social care again intervened, deeming the arrangement unsuitable and ordering her back home.

When Maura’s father returned the following month, social care remained involved due to ongoing concerns about neglect and the condition of the house.

Throughout her time with SOHK, Maura has shown remarkable resilience. Despite her challenges, she remains engaged, displaying determination and resilience, though her home circumstances remain a significant source of concern.
